White Label Products vs. Private Label Products

Apr 25, 2021

In the ever-growing market today, companies all around the world are constantly searching for new ways to gain an edge over their competitors and increase profit margins across the board. As demand increases, this only becomes more and more difficult to accomplish over time.

If you’re a business owner that doesn’t already have a product line that your customer base is dedicated to or are looking to add to your existing product line, you have a wide range of options in front of you today. Better yet, a majority of these options make it extremely easy.

Whether you’re looking to sell products in your brick-and-mortar store or are interested in selling products online, you can always turn to private labeling and white labeling. They’re two popular options when trying to decrease cost and overhead while avoiding growing pains.

As popular as private label products and white label products are today, many people don’t understand the differences between the two. In fact, many people today use the two terms interchangeably, only adding to the confusion. Don’t worry, we’re going to break it down for you!

What Are Private Label Products?

private label product is any product that’s sourced by a reliable manufacturer to be sold under an exclusive retailer’s brand name. Private label goods have become an extremely popular way for many companies and business owners to start selling and marketing their very own products.

When selling private label products, you don’t have to worry about any of the manufacturing or product development behind that product. At the same time, you get to customize it however you like -- including the label -- to ensure the product meets your company’s standards.

There are a wide range of private label manufacturers that can help you grow your company in just about every niche market you can think of. Creating a private label product is extremely easy and when done correctly, it can save and make your company a ton of money across the board.

Example of a Private Label Brand

A good example of a private label brand isn’t hard to find, especially in today’s market where every company is starting to jump on board the private label train. Believe it or not, Amazon is a prime example of a private label business and they have a ton of these products available.

In fact, Amazon has over 400 different private label brands under their belt that sell over 240,000 different products. Some of the most popular private label brands sold under Amazon are AmazonBasics, Amazon Essentials, Pinzon, Amazon Collection, Solimo, and much more.

Their private label products are so popular that you can’t search through their site without being tempted by at least one of them. Whether you’re searching for pet supplies, household items, jewelry, bed and bath items, office supplies, or clothes, Amazon has it available for you!

What Are White Label Products?

White label products are extremely similar to private label products, but they’re different in one major way. While they’re still products that are manufactured and produced by another company, they’re not made exclusively for one retailer -- which would be private labeling.

Instead, a white label brand is one that’s made by a reliable manufacturer and available to be sold by a wide range of different retailers. All these retailers are essentially selling the same product, although each retailer can rebrand the soap with their own label, logo, and marketing.

It might sound like the same, but white label products aren’t customized to each retailer’s liking. It’s a generic product that’s given a ‘white label.’ It’s a quick and sure way to get your product on the market at a reasonable rate, but won’t be unique when compared to others.

Examples of White Label Products

A white label product comes with a wide range of benefits for both large and small businesses. Kirkland Signature is one such example, which is owned by Cotsco and has a wide range of products available. Of course, none of the products under that brand are made by Costco.

At Costco, you’ll notice they offer everything from grocery items to clothing, luggage, beauty products, household products, hardware, diapers, pet food, office supplies, and gasoline -- all under their Kirkland Signature brand. The brand is owned by them and so are the products.

Of course, they don’t manufacture any of these products and they aren’t the ones handling the product development. Instead, they simply have to put in orders for these products that are manufactured by someone else, but sold under their own brand name -- isn’t that genius?

Why Are Private Labeling and White Labeling So Popular?

If you’re wondering what got private label products and white label products so popular in today’s niche market, a majority of it has to do with the low-cost, reduced overhead, limited time, and minimum effort needed to bring a product to market. It’s fast, simple, and profitable.

Private labeling is a great way to offer your customers a customized and unique product without having to do a majority of the work. It’s normally reserved for larger businesses because it’s a little more expensive than white labeling, but that doesn’t mean small businesses can’t do it.

White labeling is the more generic way of bringing a product to your customer base. The product won’t be unique and your customers will be able to find that same product elsewhere, but it’ll still have your brand’s logo and branding on it -- so it definitely has its advantages.
